JK I need to decide how to spend our money this year. Our board meeting (me and SO) includes listing out all the projects we think are the most important/will make running the farm easier or profitable and prioritizing.
For this year here is everything on the docket:
o Fork attachment with hitch receiver and front hay spear receiver - $800
o Attachments to make the forks longer - $150
o Horse shelter in big pasture - $1500-$3000
o Arena leveled- ~$4k- I also REALLY selfishly want this
o Footing- several thousand I would probably just get it leveled and wait a year to do footing
o Large pile in pasture buried (thorns, bad trees, some trash we can’t get out, etc)- $700
o A-frame rental cabin- I REALLY want to do this because payback is like 1 year
o I think this will wind up being done in stages (2 year project)
o PERT test - $300
o This lets us know the location I have picked out is able to have a septic system put in
o Septic- $3500
o Electric and water hookup - $0 (hopefully , just hassles of getting it hooked up
o Driveway extension over to location - ~$3k
o Permits- TBD
o Building the cabin - ~$10k
o Finishing it out - $2k?
o Large Roof over the hitching post/wash rack outside barn, this would let us get some of the equipment out of the barn to make more room for the horses!!- several thousand we haven’t priced this out yet
o Barn doors - ~$1500
o Seeding the pastures this fall - $1000 (total guess right now)
These are all top of mind right now and not including many things we cash flow throughout the year . (Also not including anything inside the house (shower reno, flooring, etc)
Already this year we have bought a disc, easy attachment for all the implements we have, a barn fan, and things I am forgetting because my memory is quite bad.
Selfishly for the big things this year I want to do the arena, horse shelter and bury the non aesthetic pile in the horse pasture this year.
But In reality I am leaning towards prepping the rental cabin this year.
I want to make this property into something that will not drain our paychecks and instead add because this is truly a passion project for both of us that we dump huge amounts of mental physical and emotional energy into.
Enjoy some of my visions of the cabin I want:
I love that our son gets to grow up on the farm to experience all the skills, work ethic and peace. I hope bring out his fullest potential no matter what he chooses to do with his life.
Well, I will update later on what we decide to move forward on and the real costs!
Happy trails,
-A
